Remember that many pharmaceuticals contain sulfites. If you require an injection, ask if the medication has been preserved with sulfites.

Furthermore, many processed foods have the potential to be treated with sulfites.  It is best to cook with organic foods whenever possible.

Pass the catchup - not!  Condiments have the potential of containing sulfites.  So do dried fruits, wine and spirits.

There are many processed foods that can contain sulfites.  Some of these include frozen vegetables and fruits, guacamole, coleslaw, corn and potatoes.  Any form of seafood can have sulfites.  Breading mix, brown sugar, cereal, caramel, syrup, cornstarch and frozen potato products should be avoided.  Other items that may be treated with sulfites include candy, horseradish, jams, maraschino cherries, dried noodles and rice, olives, relish, chips, pickled products, sauerkraut and gravy.  Sulfites may be used in trail mix, processed coconut, colas, juices, alcoholic products, frozen breads, canned products, cookie mixes, dough conditioners, processed meats and pectin.  There are many more potentially unsafe foods, so always read labels.  When in doubt, call the manufacturer.

                                 Sulfite Allergy
Sulfites have been used for more than 2,000 years in both drink and food processing.  They are used primarily as preservatives and sanitary agents.  Foods such as corn and potatoes are bleached with sulfites while many grapes are sprayed with them.

Salad bars are a place to avoid if you have a sulfite allergy.  The foods included in salad bars are usually sprayed or treated with sulfites.

About one in one hundred adults in the U.S. alone have sensitivities to sulfites, while five percent of these are actually allergic.  Some common symptoms of a sulfite sensitivity or allergy are rashes, headaches, cramping, difficulty breathing or more.  Individuals with asthma are particularly susceptible to reactions from sulfites.

By law, manufacturers must place warning labels on products containing 10 parts sulfite per million or more.  Unfortunately, this means many products contain sulfites that are not labeled.
