Is it Safe?  Some believe Kamut and Spelt are safe for those who are allergic to wheat, when in fact this is not true.  Kamut is a grain that is related to wheat.  Although spelt is often advertised as safe, people with wheat allergies have reacted to it.

Who can Resist Play-Doh?  Those who have an allergy to wheat or gluten, that's who!  Hasbro, the manufacturer of Play-Doh, has stated that they cannot release the ingredient list for their product.  However, those who are allergic to wheat or gluten should not use Play-Doh.

Wheat Substitutions for Baking  Cooking without wheat can be a challenge.  Try these wheat substitutions the next time you bake.  For each cup of wheat flour, try one of the following:

  • One Cup Corn Flour
  • 5/8 Cup Potato Starch Flour
  • 7/8 Cup Rice Flour
  • 1 Cup Soy Flour Plus 1/4 Cup Potato Starch Flour

Grains that are related to wheat include barley, kamut, millet, oats, rice, rye, spelt and teff.

                           Wheat and Gluten Allergy
A true wheat allergy is very rare.  More people, almost one in seven, are actually sensitive to gluten.  Gluten is a protein found in oats, barley, rye and wheat.

When you are at the grocery store, it is important to understand what might contain wheat.  The list is great, so fasten your seat belts and let's go wheat-free shopping.

First of all, rye, oats and barley (malt) do not have to follow the "Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Act."  If the product you are looking at does not say, "wheat" on the label, it may still contain gluten.

Now for the products that may contain wheat.  Look for wheat or gluten in bread crumbs, baking powder, broth, cereal extract, brown rice syrup, ice cream, candy, communion wafers, dextrin, gelatinized starch, high protein powder (hvp), hydrolyzed plant protein (hpp), imitation seafood, bacon, lunch meat, malt, beer, modified starch, texturized vegetable protein (tvp), flavored hot beverages, stuffing, sauces, pasta, milk shakes, pre-basted poultry, licorice, marinades, malts, soups, soy sauce and gum.

Non-food items can contain wheat or gluten as well.  Look for it in cosmetics, supplements, medications, vitamins and hygiene products.
