| A true wheat allergy is very rare.
More people, almost one in seven, are actually
sensitive to gluten. Gluten is a protein found
in oats, barley, rye and wheat.
When you are at the grocery
store, it is important to
understand what might contain wheat. The list
is great, so fasten your seat belts and let's go
wheat-free shopping.
First of all,
rye, oats and barley (malt) do not have to follow
the "Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Act."
If the product you are looking at does not say,
"wheat" on the label, it may still contain gluten.
Now for the
products that may contain wheat. Look for
wheat or gluten in bread crumbs, baking powder,
broth, cereal extract, brown rice syrup, ice cream,
candy, communion wafers, dextrin, gelatinized
starch, high protein powder (hvp), hydrolyzed plant
protein (hpp), imitation seafood, bacon, lunch meat,
malt, beer, modified starch, texturized vegetable
protein (tvp), flavored hot beverages, stuffing,
sauces, pasta, milk shakes, pre-basted poultry,
licorice, marinades, malts, soups, soy sauce and
gum.
Non-food
items can contain wheat or gluten as well.
Look for it in cosmetics, supplements, medications,
vitamins and hygiene products.
