Furthermore, many processed foods have the potential to be treated with sulfites.  It is best to cook with organic foods whenever possible.

Pass the catchup – not!  Condiments have the potential of containing sulfites.  So do dried fruits, wine and spirits.

There are many processed foods that can contain sulfites.  Some of these include frozen vegetables and fruits, guacamole, coleslaw, corn and potatoes.  Any form of seafood can have sulfites.  Breading mix, brown sugar, cereal, caramel, syrup, cornstarch and frozen potato products should be avoided.  Other items that may be treated with sulfites include candy, horseradish, jams, maraschino cherries, dried noodles and rice, olives, relish, chips, pickled products, sauerkraut and gravy.  Sulfites may be used in trail mix, processed coconut, colas, juices, alcoholic products, frozen breads, canned products, cookie mixes, dough conditioners, processed meats and pectin.  There are many more potentially unsafe foods, so always read labels.  When in doubt, call the manufacturer.

If you have a sulfite allergy, it is best to avoid eating out.  If you have no choice, bring your epipen and talk to the chef about your allergy.
