Peanut and Tree Nut Allergies: The Basics

peanut allergiesDo you or someone you know have a peanut allergy?  If not, then you probably know someone who is allergic to peanuts.  After all, peanut allergies have doubled in the last five years alone.

Last year there were more than 30,000 emergency room visits linked to peanut allergies.  And of these, 2,000 people were admitted.  Sadly, about 200 of these patients died of anaphylactic shock.

Due to the prevalence of peanut allergies today, it is recommended that children under the age of three are not given peanut products.  Early exposure of peanuts many cause an allergy to develop.  Mother’s who are breastfeeding their babies should also avoid peanuts.

Some adults and children have such a strong reaction to peanuts that the smell alone can trigger an anaphylactic reaction.
