First of all, rye, oats and barley (malt) do not have to follow the “Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Act.” If the product you are looking at does not say, “wheat” on the label, it may still contain gluten.
Now for the products that may contain wheat. Look for wheat or gluten in bread crumbs, baking powder, broth, cereal extract, brown rice syrup, ice cream, candy, communion wafers, dextrin, gelatinized starch, high protein powder (hvp), hydrolyzed plant protein (hpp), imitation seafood, bacon, lunch meat, malt, beer, modified starch, texturized vegetable protein (tvp), flavored hot beverages, stuffing, sauces, pasta, milk shakes, pre-basted poultry, licorice, marinades, malts, soups, soy sauce and gum.
Non-food items can contain wheat or gluten as well. Look for it in cosmetics, supplements, medications, vitamins and hygiene products.
